Gobustan, Yanar Dag and mud volcanoes

This tour packs millions of years of the planet's history — and thousands of years of human history — into a single day. We head out to the Absheron Peninsula, where Ice Age rock carvings, bubbling mud volcano craters and a mountain that has been burning non-stop for millennia all sit within a short drive of each other. I've been running this exact route since my very first days as a guide, and I still watch guests' eyes widen every time at how much variety fits into such a small area.

Our first stop is Gobustan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. More than 6,000 carvings, between 5,000 and 40,000 years old, are cut into the rock here — hunting scenes, ritual dances, boats full of rowers, and animals that no longer exist in this region. Archaeologists still debate how ancient people achieved such precision without metal tools. We'll walk the reserve at an easy pace while I point out the most striking panels and explain why this became one of the most important Stone Age sites in the entire Caucasus.

Next come the mud volcanoes — a sight that's hard to picture until you're standing in front of one. There are around 300 in the world, and nearly half of them are in Azerbaijan. Cold, mineral-rich grey mud bubbles quietly out of the ground, sometimes calm, sometimes with a sudden little eruption. The landscape feels almost otherworldly: grey hills, silence, and the smell of earth. Most guests tell me this is the strangest — and most photogenic — part of the whole day.

We finish at Yanar Dag, the 'burning mountain.' Natural gas seeps through a thin layer of sandstone on the hillside and has been burning continuously, by most estimates, for several thousand years. Fires like this one are part of why Azerbaijan is known as the 'Land of Fire,' and why the ancient Zoroastrians considered this land sacred. The flame is at its most dramatic at dusk, so whenever possible I time the route so we arrive as the light starts to fade.

We travel by comfortable car, and the road between stops is part of the experience in its own right — the open Absheron plains, salt flats, and a horizon with nothing to interrupt it.
